The Federal University of Technology, Akure was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in September 1981. The first set of students was admitted into the first year (100 level) of the Bachelor’s degree programmes in the 1982/83 academic session. The Department of Forestry and Wood Technology was founded in 1983 as one of the foundation Departments within the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology of the University.
The Department was established to give prominence to sound scientific training and provide the much required impetus for rapid technological and industrial development in Forestry and Wood Technology. The forestry courses taught in traditional Universities emphasise forest planting and management, while little attention is given to the important area of harvesting and utilization. By virtue of our mission the programmes of the Department in addition give due attention to areas that will ensure efficient exploitation and utilisation of our resources. The programme of this Department is, therefore, designed to give students the required academic and practical background in areas of silviculture, management, inventory, harvesting and utilization of forest resources. It also emphasises special areas of forest biometrics, Geographic Information System (GIS), social and environmental forestry, pulp and paper technology, wood waste utilization and development of agroforestry practices to meet the increasing food and wood requirements of the country.
